Black-eyed Suzie || Susan Shaw

Chilling and riveting, angering and thought-provoking. We start off meeting Suzie, the "box" she puts herself in, and the "cloud" she floats on. A safe, quiet world. A world where her mother can't make Suzie talk...because if Suzie can't talk, then she can't say things to anger her mother and cause her mother to hurt her. Suzie stops sleeping. She stops talking to her mother, her sister, her father, her best friend. Everyone. She stops walking. The one thing she can't stop doing is crying. She retreats into this safe box, those safe clouds, hiding, until she is finally taken get help.

This is a beautifully written that book takes takes a frank look at the family dynamics of co-dependency and abuse, and leads the reader on a journey through Suzie’s healing process. The reader will root for Suzie as she opens up and starts to trust. After a dramatic breakthrough, Suzie alters the lives of her sister and herself forever.

The students at my school love this book. For some reason, about 7th grade, girls love to read books about horrific abuse. This author also has one called The Boy From The Basement which they like as well.

I own this book and I cannot tell you how many times I have read it. I started reading it when I was in the 7th grade and kept reading it over and over again. I am a senior this year and I am thinking about reading it again this year and writing a report on the way I look at this book. It is a very inspiring book as well as a break through. When I first read this book it made me feel as though I was not alone. Growing up was not an awesome time for me. My mother never abused me,yet I felt emotionally hurt. This book has helped me to see that others may have it worse than I ever had.

I just finished reading this book and I loved it. I read some of it to my little brother and he was full of questions...questions I couldn't answer.I was never abused and after reading this I found out some of the aftermath that could happen to a child who is abused.
